2006 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's bigger than each of them (including the all-new 2006 rav4). Equinox is big enough that its dimensions blur the line between compact and midsize sport utilities. It's nearly 14 inches longer than the ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. as a result, the equinox is roomier than other compact suvs, and has features that enhance its versatility. The back seats are mounted on tracks and slide fore and aft. Slide the seats rearward for more rear legroom. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. However, equinox only seats five because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row as the new rav4 does. it long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. Like the cr-v, rav4, and escape, equinox is based on a passenger car design. equinox was launched as a 2005 model so there aren't any major changes for 2006. However, the 2006 models do come standard with anti-lock brakes, cruise control, and other features, which wasn't the case last year. Also, interior changes have been made for 2006 to improve the appearance and function of the cabin. Both are available with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). Equinox comes standard with a 3. 4-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission. The 2006 equinox ls packs more standard equipment than last year, and the lt level has been split into two sub-levels called lt1 and lt2. equinox ls fwd 21,755) and awd 23,505) come with air conditioning; cruise control; cloth upholstery; a fold-flat front passenger seat; a multi-flex 60/40 split rear bench seat that folds, slides, and reclines; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; and power windows, mirrors, and locks with remote keyless entry. Bumpers are body-color for 2006. Ls fwd comes standard with traction control. lt1 fwd 23,050) and awd 24,675) add fog lights, carpeted floor mats, deep tinted glass, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Mirrors, door handles, and roof-rack side rails are body-color rather than charcoal or black. But its side-view shape is quite a bit different from the rest of the family, and we like it. the roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. It's a sound that no other chevrolet truck makes. the equinox look solidly planted on its wheels. Its bigger size is evident everywhere. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. Improvements for '06 include new knobs for climate control (and a claim of improved performance), and better integration of the passenger-side airbag cover. Down on the console, the t-handle shifter on the '05 models has given way to a more conventional shift lever for '06. Seat heaters are now available with cloth as well as leather seats, and the seat-heating controls of been re-located to the instrument panel. the rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth by up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat. Rear passengers also enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and dual slide-out cupholders. Rear head restraints have been down-sized slightly for '06, improving rearward visibility for the driver. gm's designers have used the space above the wheel wells to a handy cargo storage system. A lightweight reversible panel slides into slots on the equinox's wheel wells at three different heights. Carpeted on one side and plastic on the other, the panel can serve as shelf, cargo cover or even a picnic or tailgating table. The tops of the wheel wells contain storage bins for small items. And there are several tie-downs and hooks on the panel from which to hang grocery bags. However, this system is being eliminated during the 2006 model year to increase cargo capacity. xm satellite radio is a great feature when traveling cross country because the stations don't change. Simply press the blue button and a human operator responds, to provide directions and other assistance. It delivers good acceleration and it's smooth enough. Epa fuel economy estimates are 19/24 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 18/23 for the awd version. The 3. 4-liter v6 is an old overhead-valve design that lacks modern features such as variable valve timing and variable-length intake runners. So it feels strained when pushed at high rpm. It delivers 185 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. the v6 engine is aided considerably by the five-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the equinox can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 5 seconds, which should be adequate performance for most families. And while it may not excel at acceleration, equinox is rated to pull a 3500-pound trailer. its long wheelbase and 3600-pound heft give the equinox a decent ride, making it a suitable companion for long trips. Its handling is responsive and it's easy to modulate the brakes for smooth stops. the equinox has good road feel in highway driving, yet the driver may notice that steering effort is very low at low speeds for easier maneuvering in tight parking lots. The steering ratio is variable, and the equinox uses electric, rather than hydraulic, power steering. An electronic control unit programmed for a variety of performance characteristics regulates an electric motor mounted adjacent to the steering column, providing the right amount of assist for a given driving situation. We don't think the average driver will feel the difference between this system and more conventional hydraulics, and that's a good thing. Unlike a hydraulic servo, the.

America's heavy-duty family hauler. introductionas familiar as the family dog, the chevrolet suburban cruises into 2005 with the same maximum-size virtues that have kept it a best-seller for so many years. Since the 'burb first appeared, it has never wavered from its mission. It remains the first choice for anyone who needs to haul six or more people plus their cargo. Its v8 engines deliver strong torque for towing heavy loads, and it's supremely stable when pulling heavy trailers through nasty, windy weather. Suburban provides a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel. Last but not least, it's fully capable of slogging down muddy two-tracks, whether in pursuit of the great outdoors or to get some work done. the 2005 model year brings some minor improvements. Fuel economy is improved. A revised tire-pressure monitor is now standard, alerting drivers when a tire needs air. New options include stand-alone traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. The z71 off-road package is available for 2wd models. A touch-screen navigation radio is available. The onstar telematics system is upgraded with enhanced hands-free operation. Interior trim has been revised. Running boards are more aerodynamic. There's also a new 7-to-4-pin wiring adapter for the trailer package. completely redesigned for model year 2000, the suburban then received a substantial update for 2003, with more than 40 major changes designed to enhance safety and improve reliability. The stabilitrak electronic stability program became available for improved control on slippery surfaces. New airbag systems were designed to better protect children and adults of various sizes. Adjustable pedals became available for the comfort and safety for drivers of smaller stature. Brakes were refined, and an all-new electrical architecture promised improved reliability. Xm satellite radio became available, along with a new panasonic dvd system for back-seat monkeys. The numbers don't really relate to anything and the term 1500 is often dropped in conversations. Suburban 1500 models come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500 models are available with a choice of 6. 0-liter or 8. 1-liter v8s. No diesel is currently available. the ls is the standard trim in either load range, which includes three-zone manual air conditioning, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with six-way power for the driver, 60/40 split folding middle bench seat, fog lamps, assist steps, powered and heated outside mirrors, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear window defogger. A preferred equipment group 1,035) adds bucket seats with upgraded cloth upholstery, a floor console, and a bose nine-speaker audio system with rear controls and headphone jacks. Xm satellite radio 325) is optional. the more luxurious lt 5,710) brings automatic climate control, leather seat inserts, power folding mirrors with in-glass turn signals and electrochromic dimming on the driver's side, the bose stereo, xm satellite radio, onstar, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and many other features. Lt is also available for the 2500 5,320). the z71 off-road package 6,185) includes heavy-duty springs and gas-pressure shocks, appearance items outside and lt-grade comfort and convenience features inside. Z71 is now offered on 2wd and 4wd 1500s, but not on 2500s. entertainment options include a panasonic dvd player 1,485 on ls, $1,295 on lt) with wireless headphones, auxiliary audio/video jacks and remote game plug-in. The touch-screen navigation system is optional as is an electric tilt-and-slide sunroof. walkaroundthere's no mistaking the 'burb. The chevrolet suburban looks like an old friend. It hasn't been completely redesigned since 2000, and the 2005 model retains a family resemblance to suburbans far older than that. Most people probably won't even notice that the running boards, or assist steps, have been redesigned for better aerodynamics and, says chevrolet, better durability. but we will miss the side-by-side cargo doors that are no longer available at the rear. Gm says they didn't sell very well, but we found them useful when pulling trailers because they would usually clear the trailer tongue jack. They also made it easier to control a dog while opening them. Nonetheless, for 2005, all suburbans come with the one-piece rear hatch with separately opening glass that most families prefer. The hatch is lightweight and can be opened with one hand. It comes with a window wiper/washer, and the one-piece window affords the driver a good view rearward. a puddle lamp mounted below the lt's side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter. It can be turned on using the keyless remote. That's a nice feature when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. In most respects, it is identical to the more luxurious gmc yukon xl. interiorclimbing into a suburban is a challenge for some. Running boards make it easier for others. The suburban's step-in height is lower than it was with pre-2000 models, a benefit of the current model's fully boxed frame. once inside, the suburban is roomy and friendly. The lt's leather seats seem more supportive, but we think there's room for improvement here. Big and cushy, they are similar to the seats found in all of gm's full-size pickups and suvs. Dual-level airbags inflate with less force in less forceful collisions. Sensors in the front passenger seat and seat belts measure the size and weight of the front-seat passenger and disable the airbag for child-size passengers. the second row is quite comfortable and very roomy. Headphone jacks allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front tune in the radio. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. The one-piece seat can be removed and is mounted on wheels, but it weighs 75 pounds, so removing it is a lot easier with a second person to help. We've done it.) loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it. The spare tire lives underneath the vehicle, freeing up rear cargo space. driving impressionride quality in the 2005 chevy suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation (pre-2000) models. The standard premium smooth ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at a normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up the soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive when braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering, both of which improve stability. handling is excellent for a big, heavy truck. The steering is responsive and doesn't isolate the driver from the road. The suburban grips the road surprisingly well for such a large vehicle. We never lost traction while pushing hard over wet mountain roads on a rainy day in colorado. Two of us, both with racing experience, took turns driving into wet turns as quickly as we dared and the suburban never lost grip. 2005 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standing like a rock against new competition. introductionthe choice for best full-size pickup is not as clear as it was three years ago, when the chevrolet silverado and the gmc sierra appeared to be the leaders of the pack. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, toyota has added a crew cab model to its tundra line, and nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan. There isn't a dog among them. All are superb in their own way. yet silverado still rides as well or better than any of them, and it handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give silverado a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Silverado's interior was significantly updated in 2003, and so was its electrical system. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable. for 2005, most silverados come with wider, lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels, promising better handling than before. Short-box extended cabs with 4wd now offer a more powerful all-alumium v8, while a gas/electric hybrid option promises lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 include dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500. standard equipment on all silverado models are cruise control, cd player, a step bumper, and 17-inch chromed steel wheels. The w/t (work truck) package, intended primarily for commercial and municipal fleet sales, deletes these niceties for an average credit of $1,600. moving up to ls trim (starting at $25,265) adds a long list of comforts and appointments, including power windows, locks and mirrors; upgraded audio and upholstery; and the 4. 8-liter v8 with automatic transmission. Ls crew cabs come with the 5. 3-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $32,965) is downright luxurious, with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, bose audio, and a new version of the onstar telematics system. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on all lt models. the z71 off-road package includes full ls trim, plus special off-road suspension, locking rear differential, p265/70r17 on/off-road tires, skid plates, high-capacity air cleaner, wheel flares, fog lamps, and deep-tinted glass. silverado ss is a performance model equipped with a high-output 345 horsepower vortec 6000 6. 0-liter engine designed for quick acceleration and relaxed cruising. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 1,100). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs. silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier. the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. A driver information center, located in the instrument panel cluster, provides various bits of information, i. The 2012 chevy silverado doesn't boast the latest design, but all the current full-size pickups are good and it mostly comes down to preference. Silverado is available in a wide range of sizes, engines, and capabilities. Most important: stabilitrak electronic stability control adds trailer sway control and hill-start assist. 2012 chevy silverado wt models now come standard with cruise control and a spare tire lock. Heated and cooled front seats and hdd navigation with xm radio and usb are available on the 2012 silverado ltz. 2012 silverado models get new colors and chrome trim changes. Silverado was last redesigned for 2007. the base engine is a 4. 3-liter v6 (195 hp/260 lb-ft of torque) with a 4-speed automatic, offered only on regular cabs and 2wd extended cab models with the standard bed. Xfe versions feature aerodynamic upgrades in the form of a soft bed cover and extended front air dam, plus aluminum wheels (including the spare) and lower front suspension arms, locking rear differential, and low rolling resistance tires. A trailering package is standard so xfe models can tow up to 7,000 pounds. silverado hybrid, available only in the crew cab body style and tow trim levels, uses a 6. 0-liter v8 (332 hp/367 lb-ft of torque), battery pack, and 4-speed automatic with two electric motors in it. Two weight classes are offered, the normal 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500. the suburban's competitors in the full-size field are obvious. All the engines offer flex fuel capability, meaning they will operate on gasoline or e85, which is 85-percent ethanol. There is a 6. 0-liter with variable valve timing for the 2500 models. The mesh grille is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the daytime running lights use separate lamps and can be switched off for after-dark campground arrivals. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and a good indication of gm's solid body quality on the current generation of trucks. the hood has two long bulges at its sides, reaching almost from windshield to grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome; we call them a good way to keep such a large expanse of otherwise-flat steel from fluttering, just as long-cab pickups have grooves on the roof. For aesthetics we would prefer if the roof-mounted antenna were centered but long, flat cargo on the roof might present a problem. the rear liftgate is vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Rear wiper coverage is average at best. Some are nearly void of chrome while the z71 adds machismo with sizable fender flares and side steps so short drivers can get in and tall ones can mess up their pant legs. the standard wheels are five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum. Polished wheels are available. Also available are 20-inch wheels that look good, but we think they are too big for grown-ups. Taller tire sidewalls yield a better ride and in most consumer-magazine testing those large-diameter wheels don't go, stop or handle any better, they just ride harder so we prefer the 17-inch wheels. With all the seats in place and set for passengers, 45. 8 cubic feet of cargo space is available, with 90 behind the second row with the third row removed. But there is a nice compartment over the left wheel well, for tools, flashlights, snow chains or the like. smart storage space abounds. The huge console has deep storage and a tray on top. There are two cup holders in a removable tray forward of the console, and one in each wide door pocket. With a middle-row bench seat the right third of the seat folds independently of the left, easing curb-side entry to the third row or allowing skis or boards on the right with two passengers on the left.

Gm's answer to chrysler's pt cruiser. introductionthe chevrolet hhr was launched as an all-new model for 2006. It's built on the platform of the winning chevy cobalt small sedan, and incorporates the cobalt's best features: engine, transmission and suspension. The hhr is on a smaller scale, but there are no bones about its retro styling. we found the hhr to be fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus it gets decent fuel economy. The interior wasn't as functional as we'd have liked, however, and the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather. lineupthe chevrolet hhr comes in a simple ls model, plus a 1lt and 2lt. Abs comes standard on the 2lt, and is optional for the ls and 1lt 400). Electronic stability control is not available. walkaroundif there's ever been a case of a picture of a so-called suv being worth a thousand words, the hhr should be it. It looks like a 1949 panel delivery truck, with the edges smoothed over. This is the current look, whose origins are unclear, but may trace to the mitsubishi endeavor, whose flattened and edged flares were designed purely to be noticed. speaking of the current look, the tail lamps are two round red vertical bulbs on each side. The big grille is chrome, every inch of it, and looks almost exactly like the '49 suburban grille. The headlights, however, are modern glittering wedges, containing one big beam and the turn signal. the front and rear bumpers are molded plastic, unlike the steel in the body. Technically, they may be part of the fascia, but because they take the conspicuous shape of bumpers, they are more like square lumps extending from the extremities of the vehicle. the glass runs neatly uninterrupted all around the vehicle, with five rectangular windows from b-pillar around the rear to b-pillar. There's something about the simple shape of these windows that gives the hhr a low-rider look, although the roof itself is relatively high, as the name declares. Roof rails are almost useless without crossbars, and we think this vehicle would look more appropriate with a functional black after-market rack anyhow. the hhr was designed by the same man who designed the pt cruiser; he left chrysler for gm shortly afterward. We received quite a few comments on the hhr's looks, all of them favorable, some thinking it was the new pt cruiser, and others simply asking what it was. 'wow, that looks terrific, just terrific,' said one fellow. We asked what he liked about the styling. 'well, i've got a '23 dump truck,' he replied, 'which i wish i could drive on the street because it looks so cool. The tan cloth interior, despite its name of 'cashmere cloth,' looks like upholstery that might be found in an inexpensive furnished rental unit. The door pockets are small. There's a useful flip-up compartment on top of the dash, however, and there's a small glovebox. in the rear, there's one cupholder and small door pockets. The back of the front passenger seat has a tight storage net, but not the back of the driver's seat. Even operating the driver's window, at toll booths for example, requires leaning forward and reaching down. Window switches should be on the driver's door. the turn signal makes a loud, rapid, annoying click. The rearview mirror blocks a significant chunk of forward visibility out the smallish windshield. the gauges and controls are, well, general motors. Superfluous chrome rings and trim, and instruments designed to look cool, rather than to be easily readable. one good thing (even if it is bright chrome) is the door handle, an ergonomically correct ring which actuates with a horizontal inward pull. if the hhr misses on the little interior things, the cargo storage possibilities are excellent, although the total cargo area of 55. 6 cubic feet is 8. 4 less than in the pt cruiser. The rear split 60/40 seat folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat; and since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the left, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally. The rear liftgate is one piece, and raises easily. not surprisingly, there isn't much legroom in the rear seat. Kids are always fine, as long as three of them can share one drink. We actually carried six 10-year-old boys on a soccer team for 60 miles in the hhr, and they were all happy. Even the two who squeezed into the way back. overall, interior-wise, the hhr isn't in the same league as the honda element. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter ecotec is a wonderful little engine. It makes 172 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque at 5000 rpm, numbers which don't indicate anything special. In fact, that torque peak suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak. We drive up a steep, slow hill every day, and the hhr plugged up the hill like a tractor, with no shifting-down of the automatic transmission. Which is more than can be said of the powerful pontiac gto we tested recently. transmission ratios have a lot to do with this efficient delivery of power. In fact, we liked the way the automatic, without a separate manual mode, could be easily manually downshifted anyhow, and how it held second gear going down that same steep, slow hill. Smooth ride, but built like a rock. introductiongm has been the leader in full-size pickups for several years running, but is now facing assaults from all directions. Ford has introduced an all-new f-150. Dodge recently re-engineered the ram. Toyota has introduced a tundra crew cab model. And if that isn't enough, nissan has the gall to launch the titan, a full-size pickup that's every bit as big as the domestics, if not bigger. Model year 2004 is the year of the pickup. Those who value a smooth-riding truck with a low load height should take a good hard look at a two-wheel-drive silverado. And those who value style could do worse. Silverado's aggressive looks draw the eye. This truck is not the wallflower it was a couple of years ago. silverado got an edgy new look last year, along with significant interior improvements and an all-new electrical system designed to improve reliability by drastically reducing the number of wires running all over the place. It's all be streamlined. new for 2004 is a roomy and comfortable 1500 silverado crew cab in either 2wd or 4wd. (this is a half-ton model that should not be confused with last year's heavy-duty 1500 hd.) there’s more standard equipment in base-level models for 2004, and there's more content in the z71 off-road package. silverado rides, handles, and stops as well as the best of them. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give the gm trucks a strong, rigid platform. It is, as chevy says, like a rock. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Silverado 1500 models are available with a 4. 3-liter v6, 4. 8-liter v8, or 5. 3-liter v8. the 2004 silverado comes with more standard features than last year, including cruise control, power door locks, black bodyside moldings, chrome bumpers, uplevel wheels, and an am/fm radio with cd player. New tire choices are available as well. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim. silverado options include xm satellite radio, which provides cd-quality broadcast of 100 digital channels coast to coast, and a bose sound system. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system and rear-seat audio controls. A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. They look like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant saying, 'get out of the way, private, i've got work to do.' a large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, including the fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. Add the powerful hood and the silverado presents an appearance that's almost menacing. Squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, 33. 7 on 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The standard front bench seat is comfortable and can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It’s split 40/20/40, and the middle part of the bench folds down to become a center console armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. Bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The silverado's seats are big and cushy, but not as comfortable as those in the ram and f-150. the bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff.
