2004 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth ride, but built like a rock. introductiongm has been the leader in full-size pickups for several years running, but is now facing assaults from all directions. Ford has introduced an all-new f-150. Dodge recently re-engineered the ram. Toyota has introduced a tundra crew cab model. And if that isn't enough, nissan has the gall to launch the titan, a full-size pickup that's every bit as big as the domestics, if not bigger. Model year 2004 is the year of the pickup. Those who value a smooth-riding truck with a low load height should take a good hard look at a two-wheel-drive silverado. And those who value style could do worse. Silverado's aggressive looks draw the eye. This truck is not the wallflower it was a couple of years ago.  silverado got an edgy new look last year, along with significant interior improvements and an all-new electrical system designed to improve reliability by drastically reducing the number of wires running all over the place. It's all be streamlined.  new for 2004 is a roomy and comfortable 1500 silverado crew cab in either 2wd or 4wd. (this is a half-ton model that should not be confused with last year's heavy-duty 1500 hd.) there’s more standard equipment in base-level models for 2004, and there's more content in the z71 off-road package.  silverado rides, handles, and stops as well as the best of them. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give the gm trucks a strong, rigid platform. It is, as chevy says, like a rock. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Silverado 1500 models are available with a 4. 3-liter v6, 4. 8-liter v8, or 5. 3-liter v8.  the 2004 silverado comes with more standard features than last year, including cruise control, power door locks, black bodyside moldings, chrome bumpers, uplevel wheels, and an am/fm radio with cd player. New tire choices are available as well. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim.  silverado options include xm satellite radio, which provides cd-quality broadcast of 100 digital channels coast to coast, and a bose sound system. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system and rear-seat audio controls. A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. They look like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant saying, 'get out of the way, private, i've got work to do.' a large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, including the fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. Add the powerful hood and the silverado presents an appearance that's almost menacing. Squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, 33. 7 on 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings.  a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The standard front bench seat is comfortable and can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It’s split 40/20/40, and the middle part of the bench folds down to become a center console armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. Bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The silverado's seats are big and cushy, but not as comfortable as those in the ram and f-150.  the bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier.  the instrument panel, redesigned for 2003, features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. The manually controlled system that comes on base models is a good, straightforward design. Manual sliders are used to adjust the temperature the available electronic climate controls are better, featuring two large knobs for driver and passenger. A large led displays the mode and fan settings. It's a well-engineered system that's s. Power Windows✔ Tachometer✔ Heated Seats✔ Power Locks✔ Bucket Seats✔ Cruise Control✔ AM/FM✔ CD Player

2003 chevrolet silverado 3500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Substantial changes improve one of the best. introductionchevrolet's full-size pickups get an edgy new look this year. Silverado's aggressive stance is jolting for drivers used to conservative-looking chevy pickups, but it's an evolutionary change and one that was needed. We'll get used to it.  hidden beneath are considerable changes. Chevrolet silverado boasts more than 40 major changes for 2003. New audio and climate controls are easier to use and more sophisticated, the latter available with well-designed digital controls. Other changes are harder to discern, but are important from reliability and engineering standpoints, such as the all-new electrical system that eliminates thick bundles of wires and hundreds of connections. V8 engines offer improved throttle response and reliability and reduced emissions, while v6 engines deliver better performance and reduced emissions. (some of these changes were actually made mid-cycle to the 2002 models.)  chevy silverado continues to be one of the best full-size trucks available. It shares that crown with the similar gmc sierra. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give the gm trucks a strong, rigid platform. Silverado is a highly capable truck. It rides, handles, and stops as well as, maybe better than, the best of them. It's quick and it's comfortable. These are still full-size work trucks, however, so don't expect a cadillac ride.  technology is really improving life with full-size pickups. Stabilitrak, an anti-skid system, improves driver control in avoidance maneuvers and on slick surfaces. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are available for selected models.  payload capacities vary. The 2500-series models offer payloads in the 2600- to 3200-pound range.  silverado 1500 models are available with a 4. 3-liter v6, 4. 8-liter v8, or 5. 3-liter v8. 2500 models and the 1500 hd crew cab are powered exclusively by the 6. 0-liter v8. The 1500 hd model combines light-duty 1500-series styling in a heavy-duty six-passenger crew cab with a 300-horsepower vortec v8. (2500hd and 3500 models are covered in a separate new car test drive review.)  silverado ss is a special high-performance model equipped with a high-output vortec 6000 designed for exhilarating off-line acceleration. Ss gets a unique high-performance z60 chassis package, 20-inch wheels and tires, full-time all-wheel drive, a lower, wider stance, and special exterior and interior trim.  options include xm satellite radio, which provides cd-quality broadcast of 100 digital channels coast to coast, a bose sound system. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system and rear-seat audio controls. Dual-level frontal air bags are designed to provide an appropriate amount of inflation based on the severity of the crash. It looks similar to the avalanche sport-utility truck, but the trailblazer suv and even the big express van sport the new look. The upcoming replacement for the s-10 compact pickup, called the chevy colorado, will sport a similar look.  most noticeable are the new headlights, which angle down at the top, making them look like knitted eyebrows. The grille features a large band running across the middle with a big gold chevy bow tie in the center. It's all smoothly integrated into the front end with the redesigned headlamps. Silverado's new aerodynamically styled hood suggests power and strength and works with the headlights for an almost menacing appearance. Front tow hooks and fog lamps are recessed into the front bumper.  along the sides are new front fenders, new body side moldings, and a new wheel line-up. In back, bulging taillamps boast a fresh design that maintains the chevrolet family look yet clearly identifies it as a new silverado. Models with quadrasteer have bulging rear fenders.  the doors and door openings are large. Big door handles make getting in easy. Puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of the bulging rear fenders on some models add visibility for improved safety. Indentations molded into the bed allow use of boards to form two-tier loading and bulkhead dividers. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, 33. 7 on 4wd. Heavy-duty models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. New dual-zone climate controls are standard. Sliders are used to adjust the temperature on base models with manual controls. Better are the available electronic climate controls, which use two large knobs for driver and passenger. A large led displays the mode and fan settings. It's a well-engineered system that's sophisticated, yet easy to operate. Xm satellite radio is a good option for people who want minimal blab interrupting their music or listen to dedicated news or sports channels. We wouldn't want to ride across the state in the back seat, but three adults can ride in reasonable comfort back there. Most of the time, the back seat is used for cargo. Alternatively, the seat bottom can be flipped up to load gear onto the floor. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the door.  the back seats in crew cab models are roomy and very comfortable, similar to those in a suburban. The rear seats can be flipped down to provide a big, secure cargo area. This is a great truck for someone who wants a roomy rear seat with interior cargo space and big trailer-towing capability.  . driving impressionrevised for 2003, the chevrolet silverado is among the best of the full-size pickups.  silverado feels tight and quiet. There's little road noise and wind noise. Those are benefits of the stiff frame, which minimizes noise and vibration from the running gear. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, 33. 7 on 4wd. Short boxes are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 60. 2 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All boxes are 50 inches wide between the wheel housings.  a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel and resists dents and never rusts. Pro-tec silverado tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates.  . interiorthe chevy silverado is roomy and comfortable. Available in cloth or vinyl, the standard front bench is comfortable and can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. Split 40/20/40, the middle part of the bench folds down to become a center console armrest. There's plenty of head room, leg room, hip room, and shoulder room.  available bucket seats are comfortable and adjust every which way. Both the premium cloth and the leather are nice. The seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items. It would be even better if the rubber would be an insert that could be removed for cleaning. It would be better still if the top of the console wasn't angled forward: lay a clipboard there and it'll slide off.  a redesigned instrument panel for 2003 includes a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, battery charge. Heavy-duty models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. It's more attractive and more sophisticated than the previous system, but just as easy to use. The cab is stiffened by a magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the r. Heated Seats✔ Tachometer✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Bucket Seats

2008 pontiac g5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Swoopy coupe gets more standard equipment. introductionthe pontiac g5 is a good-looking front-wheel-drive coupe that delivers satisfying straight-line performance and reasonable fuel economy.  the g5 comes in a standard version and as a sportier gt. The ride is a bit firm but not uncomfortable.  with any coupe, interior space and passenger capacity are compromised for sporty styling and that's the case here. Pontiac describes the g5 as a five-passenger car, but limited rear legroom makes carrying five adults a serious challenge. The back of the cabin is best used for parcels.  underneath the g5 are the same mechanical underpinnings from the chevrolet cobalt coupe that was introduced in 2005. Standard equipment has been upgraded: 2008 g5 models come with head-curtain airbags, a tire-pressure monitor, and xm satellite radio. Onstar and stabilitrak are now standard on the gt. lineupthe 2008 pontiac g5 is available only as a coupe, which means slick styling but only two doors and a smallish back seat. Xm satellite radio is standard. The standard suspension, which gm calls fe1, is tuned for a smooth ride. The gt also adds cruise control, foglamps, onstar, a seven-speaker stereo, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, audio and cruise controls on the steering wheel, and a chrome-tipped exhaust. A cigarette lighter and ashtray are also available 35).  safety features include frontal air bags, and front seat belts with pretensioners (in a crash these remove the slack). Anti-lock brakes (abs), standard on gt and optional on the base model, can help drivers avoid accidents by allowing them to maintain control of the steering at maximum braking effort. Abs is well worth the price.  the onstar service available on the 2008 g5 includes the general motors advanced automatic crash notification (aacn) system, which makes crash data available to participating 911 centers, to help them dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. Also available is onstar's vehicle diagnostics notification system that allows subscribers to receive free monthly reports via e-mail. Each diagnostic report provides information on the remaining life of the engine oil, as well as tire pressures and checks on the engine and transmission, emissions controls, braking systems, and air bags. walkaroundwith its twin grille nostrils separated by an arrowhead-like divider, there is no mistaking the g5 for anything but a pontiac. Pontiac has steadily and consistently nurtured and developed this design theme since 1961, and now it is surely one of the most, if not the most, recognizable motif in the u. Auto industry.  from the front, side or rear the g5 has a cleaner and smoother look than some pontiacs of the recent past, which tended to be cluttered with stick-on body cladding. There is plenty of legroom for two people up front. The driver's seat is adjustable for height. However, it seems to work better for raising short drivers than it does lowering down to add headroom for taller folks. The problem is that when the seat is lowered all the way to accommodate a tall driver, the seat cushion tilts a bit forward.  all the controls are easy to find and use but there is a shortage of storage bins and trays.  the back seat is barely suitable for a six-foot adult for a short trip across town. It is an excellent location, however, for parcels.  like many coupes, which favor a low roof as they go for a streamlined look, the g5 has somewhat narrow windows. Some people like that because it makes them feel as secure as a turtle in a shell. Others find it is slightly confining. One problem is poor visibility over the driver's left shoulder. Big roof pillars and a small rear window combine to make it hard to see vehicles coming up to pass.  we applaud pontiac's decision to make side air curtains standard. In a crash these cover the side windows, front and back, to provide head protection in a side-impact. Some studies have shown such head protection greatly increases the chance of survival and, when the national highway traffic safety administration conducted side-impact crash tests on an older g5 without the air curtains, officials noted that serious head injuries for the driver would have been likely. When a second g5 with the air curtains was tested there was a big improvement, although the pontiac still did not fare as well as a 2007 honda civic coupe (which has air curtains as standard equipment).  onstar is a nice security blanket. This option combines a global positioning system and a cellular telephone (far more powerful than a hand-held cell phone) to put the driver in contact with an onstar center which is manned 24/7. In case of a crash severe enough to deploy the airbags the system will automatically call the center so help can be sent even if the occupants are incapacitated.  we liked the optional sunroof. On some cars the sunroof tends to scoop outside air and funnel it into the vehicle as if attempting to duplicate the tornado from the wizard of oz. That is not the case with the g5. There is so little turbulence it is possible to open the sunroof on a 20-degree day and enjoy the sunlight without freezing, with the heater turned up.  the trunk is rated at 13. 9 cubic feet which is competitive in this segment. The rear seat can be folded down for carrying more cargo. driving impressionas with most sporty cars, the ride in the pontiac g5 gt is somewhat firm, but encounters with potholes and tar strips do not result in any serious discomfort. The ride is comfortable enough for day-to-day commuting even in the midwest where the roads are rough.  the steering is somewhat heavy and the effort increases during turns. The steering is tight, however. The car begins to respond. The g5 gt feels secure and fairly responsive on gentle or sweeping turns. Major competitors, like the civic, now come with five-speed automatics, and their extra gear means a better chance at providing good acceleration at all times and better fuel economy as well. The best fuel economy comes from the base g5 with a manual, at 24/33 city/highway mpg.  the brakes feel great. The pedal was firm, but it was easy to slow the g5 either a little or a lot. Also, the front of the g5 didn't dip too much under hard braking. That gives it a balanced, secure feel.  the summer performance tires avail.
