2005 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standing like a rock against new competition. introductionthe choice for best full-size pickup is not as clear as it was three years ago, when the chevrolet silverado and the gmc sierra appeared to be the leaders of the pack. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, toyota has added a crew cab model to its tundra line, and nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan. There isn't a dog among them. All are superb in their own way. yet silverado still rides as well or better than any of them, and it handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give silverado a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Silverado's interior was significantly updated in 2003, and so was its electrical system. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable. for 2005, most silverados come with wider, lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels, promising better handling than before. Short-box extended cabs with 4wd now offer a more powerful all-alumium v8, while a gas/electric hybrid option promises lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 include dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500. standard equipment on all silverado models are cruise control, cd player, a step bumper, and 17-inch chromed steel wheels. The w/t (work truck) package, intended primarily for commercial and municipal fleet sales, deletes these niceties for an average credit of $1,600. moving up to ls trim (starting at $25,265) adds a long list of comforts and appointments, including power windows, locks and mirrors; upgraded audio and upholstery; and the 4. 8-liter v8 with automatic transmission. Ls crew cabs come with the 5. 3-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $32,965) is downright luxurious, with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, bose audio, and a new version of the onstar telematics system. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on all lt models. the z71 off-road package includes full ls trim, plus special off-road suspension, locking rear differential, p265/70r17 on/off-road tires, skid plates, high-capacity air cleaner, wheel flares, fog lamps, and deep-tinted glass. silverado ss is a performance model equipped with a high-output 345 horsepower vortec 6000 6. 0-liter engine designed for quick acceleration and relaxed cruising. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 1,100). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs. silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier. the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. A driver information center, located in the instrument panel cluster, provides various bits of information, i. Big, roomy, smooth and stable. introductionford redesigned and re-engineered the expedition for 2003 and the result was a vastly superior product. The ford expedition is smooth, stable and refined. Its handling is precise and responsive given its size and weight. These are benefits of its rigid chassis and sophisticated independent rear suspension. By comparison, the old (pre-2003) expedition had a rough ride and a sloppy truck-based suspension. the interior was redesigned for 2003 as well. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child. safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals to give smaller drivers a better seating, and a tire-pressure monitor. Advancetrac electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and other active safety systems are available to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle to reduce the chance of skidding off the road. the expedition is packed with features, including the availability of the powerfold third-row seat, which folds perfectly flat with the press of a button. The reverse sensing system can alert the driver as the expedition is backed toward an object such as a parked car, a short pole, or a child on a tricycle. Most of these features, including a rear-seat dvd entertainment system, are now available on the less-expensive xlt as well as the top-of-the-line eddie bauer models. towing capability is impressive. When properly equipped, the 5. 4-liter, two-wheel drive expedition is rated to tow up to 8,950 pounds. lineupford expedition comes with a choice of two engines: the standard 4. 6-liter v8 rated and the 5. 4-liter v8. Upon closer examination, it looks bigger and bolder than its predecessor. Its overall dimensions are roughly the same as before. However, the track has been widened nearly two inches to give it a well-planted stance. the ford expedition is larger than a chevy tahoe, smaller than a suburban. It's larger than a toyota sequoia and considerably larger than a dodge durango. the raised hood gives the expedition a towering presence. The standard wheels are 17 inches for a bold look. The roof height is lower than the previous generation. Bumpers are integrated more smoothly into the overall design. Door handles are the full-grip variety, making them easier to grab for occupants, whether left- or right-handed, gloved or not gloved. expedition's bumper beams are designed to prevent smaller cars from sliding beneath its frame in an accident. interiorthe ford expedition has an attractive interior. An eddie bauer expedition is a very pleasant place to be with handsome leather trim that's warm and friendly. The seats are comfortable. The interior is dressed up with a metallic satin finish used on the rings that surround the vents and door handles. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip. storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air. the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations. The available power-operated third-row seats fold flat with the press of a button. The third-row seat is split 60-40 into two seats. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The power-down buttons are convenient. The third row disappears into the floor, leaving a perfectly flat cargo area. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. After dumping that off, a pack of teenagers piled in to go to a punk rock concert. The third row is comfortable enough for a couple of full-size adults. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store. The third-row headrests can be pushed down flush with the seatbacks, greatly improving rearward visibility when no one is seated back there. the second-row bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section can be moved forward 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents easier access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface for the two people in back. The two outboard second-row seats fold easily forward for access to the third-row seat. the expedition can be outfitted with enough safety equipment to create a cocoon inside in case of an accident. Dual-stage front airbags are standard. An optional side airbag canopy is designed to protect first- and second-row passengers in a side-impact crash or in a rollover. The eddie bauer model we drove came standard with power-adjustable pedals, a feature we short women greatly appreciate to keep us a safe distance from the airbag. interior features are easy to program. It works well, but like all navigation systems, takes some time to master. driving impressionthe ford expedition is the standard bearer for its class. Sporty rs joins fresh lineup. introductionamong the best of its class, the chevrolet sonic is a newly designed subcompact built in the u. Unique gear ratios for the 6-speed manual and a unique final drive ratio for the automatic give the sonic rs more responsive acceleration at the price of fuel economy. Sonic rs is only available as a hatch. the chevrolet sonic comes standard with a 1. 8-liter engine rated at 26/35 miles per gallon city/highway. The 1. 8-liter delivers 138 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 125 pound-feet of torque at 3800 rpm. Those numbers are worth noting in comparisons with the optional turbocharged engine. The 1. 4-liter turbo delivers 138 horsepower at 4900 rpm and puts out 148 pound-feet of torque that starts at way down at 1850 rpm and extends through 4900 rpm. Fuel economy is 29/40 mpg city/highway with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox. Note that the turbocharged engine develops its horsepower at lower revs than does the 1. 8-liter engine. Drivers find the sonic zippier and more fun to drive with the 1. 4-liter turbo, and they spend less money on gas. So we think the turbo is worth the extra money. the 1. 8-liter engine is available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic; the 1. 4-liter turbo is available with a 6-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic. Sonic comes standard with a hill-hold feature on both transmissions, especially welcome on the manual gearbox on hilly terrain. When the driver is stopped and releases the brake pedal, the brakes electronically hold the car in place for two seconds, thanks to a sensor that detects the tilt of the body. newly designed, the sonic looks fresh and new. The sonic has an urban vibe, particularly the five-door hatch. Sharp creases, exposed headlamps and motorcycle-inspired design cues set it apart from other compacts, while good fit and finish and available forged alloy wheels keep it from looking cheap. sonic comes standard with 10 airbags, including seat-mounted thorax side-impact, head curtain and knee airbags. Other nice touches not often found standard on a sub-$15,000 car include a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and 60/40 folding rear seats. we found the sonic's handling to be good in general, not just for a low-priced subcompact. The body structure is quite stiff, which aids both handling and ride comfort. Corvette engineers helped tune the macpherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension for the u. Market to strike a balance between fun and comfort. All but the rs model use front disc brakes and rear drums, the latter the norm for the class because they are less expensive than rear discs. the interior is comparable for the class. While most of the interior materials are hard plastic, that's expected at these prices. Fit and finish in the sonic is better than most, but some materials such as the headliner appear low grade. Chevrolet's new mylink infotainment system is optional 595), as is a 6-speed automatic transmission 1095). sonic lt sedan 15,635) and sonic lt hatchback 16,235) get upgraded cloth upholstery, cruise control, usb port, heated outside power mirrors, power windows, rear floor mats, a six-speaker premium sound system with cd player and satellite radio capability, and alloy wheels. Lts with the automatic transmission also get remote starting and the hatchback adds a rear cargo cover. A sunroof is offered for the ltz 850), as well as the new rs. sonic rs 20,200) is offered only as a hatchback. It comes standard with the 1. 4-liter turbocharged engine, more aggressive gearing, leatherette/synthetic-suede upholstery, a flat-bottom steering wheel, aluminum pedals, sports suspension, and unique 17-inch wheels. safety features on all models include antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake force distribution (ebd) and panic brake assist; electronic stability control with rollover sensor, traction control, tire-pressure monitor, hill-hold feature, and 10 airbags: front driver and passenger, seat mounted thorax side-impact, head curtain, rear side-impact and front knee airbags. walkaroundalthough it's made in america, the 2013 chevrolet sonic was sketched and modeled in korea by designers who are avid motorcycle enthusiasts. Steel wheels with wheel covers are new this year on the base model, and they result in a cheaper look. Alloy wheels are available in 15, 16 or 17-inch diameters, and they look far more sophisticated. large gaps between body panels were one tell-tale sign of cheap cars of the past. But the chevrolet sonic manages to pare down body gaps to 3. 5 millimeters or less. Also, a special welding technique was used to make for a cleaner, more flush fit. the sonic rs model gets several tell-tale exterior cues. The ride height that has been lowered 10 millimeters and satin-finish aluminum wheels give it a sportier stance. The lower front fascia is also more aggressive and the lower portion of the grille appears to be more open. In addition, the lower rocker moldings and rear fascia are more aggressive, the exhaust outlets are bright, and the rear spoiler features a center dip that suggests a dual-cockpit design. interiorthe cabin of the chevrolet sonic carries over the motorcycle-inspired design with a large, round tachometer front and center. A large lcd speedometer to the right of the tach glows a pleasant blue color and is easy to read, though the red dial glows too brightly at night. audio and climate controls are simple, logical and easy to read and reach. The tall, narrow slots on either side of the center stack add extra storage, but they look out of place. the cloth seats are comfortable and easily adjustable. We especially like the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, which is often tough to get as standard equipment on more luxurious cars. Dash and trim materials are mostly plastics, but that's expected in this class, and the plastics are substantial, fit together well, and feature well-executed colors and textures. the sonic rs has some sporty touches. The aluminum pedals are cool, as so is the red contrast stitching in the seats and shifter.
