Prices range from $11,485 for a 2. 5-liter 4x2 xl to $19,690 for a 3. 0-liter 4x4 xlt. A 4. 0-liter engine adds $695 to the price of 3. 0-liter models. ranger xl models are light on amenities, but long on value; they come with the basics: black vinyl floor covering, am/fm radio, vinyl seats. Xlt rangers get more chrome, handholds, an am/fm/cd sound system, cloth seats and upgraded door panels. Supercabs are based on a long 126-inch wheelbase, while regular cabs are available in short-wheelbase (112 inches) and long-wheelbase (118 inches) versions. Based on a regular cab, swb, 4x2 configuration, the battery-powered ranger is a zero-emissions vehicle (zev). Prices start at $35,100 for the dc ranger, but there are some sizable incentives for buying one that reduce prices: $30,000 in california, $28,505 in new york, and $25,000 in the other 48 states. walkaroundranger owes its smooth ride (the ride is even smooth in 4wd models, no mean feat) to a rigid frame that cuts down on vibration. Two-wheel-drive models have coil springs in the front and two-stage leaf springs in the rear. The torsion-bar suspension is smooth, and the coil-spring suspensions are smoother still. The rack-and-pinion steering found on all rangers is responsive and precise. two-wheel-drive rangers come standard with a 2. 5-liter, inline-4 engine that puts out 119 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 146 foot-pounds of torque at 3000 rpm. Available on all models, it cranks out 160 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 225 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. It compares well against toyota tacoma's high-revving 3. 4-liter v6 (190 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 220 foot-pounds of torque at 3600 rpm). It zipped down the highway, always smoothly shifting into just the right ratio for the given situation. With the 3. 0 engine, a 4x4 gets 16/20 mpg, with the 4. 0-liter a 4x4 gets 15/19. When the system is disengaged, the front drive train is disconnected at the wheels. The truck gets better fuel economy with less vibration and noise. interiorthe ranger is a people-friendly truck. It has more than adequate headroom and legroom for plus-sized passengers and drivers. It's best used for groceries, toys, or kids. In fact, just getting into that space is difficult in two-door models. instruments are well placed and quite readable, and the controls are in the expected places. Visibility is good all the way around. Instead, ford supplies a round ash cup that fits in a floor-mounted cupholder. At times, it was hard to believe that we were driving a 4wd truck with torsion-bar suspension and 16-inch all-terrain tires. The ride is that smooth. there was a fair amount of wind noise in the cab-more than one would expect from such a well-built truck. Fortunately, the superb am/fm/cd sound system that comes standard in xlt models did a good job of canceling out the noise. on-road handling is precise and responsive. The ranger tracks well and holds firmly onto the blacktop, even in sharp curves. In an emergency stop, the abs holds the truck straight and true. where this truck showed its real character, though, was on a trek into the coyote mountains, which lay at the eastern base of the sierra nevadas. While the sierra's mount tom dwarfs everything in sight with its 13,652-foot elevation, the 11,200-foot coyote ridge we reached in the ranger is no walk in the park. The track leading into the coyotes is narrow, twisting, rocky, and occasionally has holes big enough to swallow a lesser truck. We purposely held off putting the truck in 4wd as long as we could. With its big tires and limited-slip rear axle, the ranger did quite well. It wasn't until we came on one particularly steep, rough section that we felt it prudent to flip the 4wd selector switch to 4wd-high. The ranger climbed the hill like a mountain goat. We left it in 4wd the rest of the trek. The only time we shifted to 4wd-low was to gear down on a steep descent. It is also sold in clone form as the mazda b-series. walkaroundranger's competition includes the chevy/gmc s-trucks (s-10 and sonoma), the dodge dakota, toyota tacoma and nissan pickup trucks. what started out as a ford response to the very successful japanese import compact pickups has sailed away from all of them in sales and popularity, offering a wider variety of powertrains, real american truck strength and commercial-grade durability. for 1997, the ranger lineup adds a significant product advantage in this segment, a new five-speed automatic transmission called the 5r55e that improves performance. a new single-disc player has been added to the audio option list, in addition to the six-disc changer that's already there. Power windows and locks have been added to the low-line xlt models as options. Flareside rear fenders can now be ordered on ranger models other than the splash. The ranger is unique in the industry in that it has a dashboard switch, operated by the ignition key, that can switch the right-side airbag off when the seat is empty or when it is occupied by a small child in a special seat. The system is automatically reset to 'on' every time the truck is started. interiorthe ranger shares its instrument panel with the explorer sport-utility, an outstanding piece of design. This is how a modern truck instrument panel should look; integrated, properly spaced, with a minimum of color and surface variations. The dials and indicators are just about perfect. There is a visible, palpable richness to the quality of the plastic and fabrics, making it an altogether pleasant place to be. (it wasn't always this way. Remember that this is the end of a 14-year evolution.) vinyl bucket seats are standard, with 60/40 split bench seats the prime option and sport buckets a second option, including a floor console with cupholders. In both the five-window and standard-cab models, the ranger and all of the other trucks in this class yield the roominess title to the new 1997 dodge dakota, which is slightly bigger in all dimensions. Ranger's standard-cab cabin is not the most hospitable place for taller drivers, with short legroom and restricted seatback rake, but the supercab version allows plenty of backrest rake, more legroom and plenty of floor space for cargo, or for the kids to use the side-facing jump seats. the splash bucket seats are very comfortable, roomy and supportive for long treks. We confess we didn't try out the jump seats, but we did use the rear cargo floor frequently and found it very convenient. It's a 25-year-old design, and its age is definitely beginning to show. The drive system in the 4x4 ranger is a straightforward part-time setup with automatic locking hubs and a simple three-way dashboard switch with lighted indicator that will swap between 2- and 4wd instantly, or into 4wd low for slogging. on the road, the ranger behaves much more like a tall car than a truck. That's not to say that the ranger handles like a sports car, because it doesn't. This one was loaded with big-ticket items like air conditioning at $805, abs at $610, a cd changer for $445, the power window and lock group at $395, a tilt wheel with cruise control for $395, sport bucket seats at $360, and an anti-theft/keyless remote entry system for $275. The mustang started the ponycar genre, and now, after 40 years of competition with the camaro, firebird and others, it's the only one left. the new mustang represents a clean-sheet design, riding on an all-new platform. It's faster, more agile and better looking than ever. The mustang gt boasts a new multi-valve, overhead-cam v8 that produces 300 horsepower and is available with a tremec five-speed manual or an automatic. lineupthe new mustang is being offered in coupe and convertible versions, though the convertibles won't be available until spring 2005. The premium package 585) adds 16-inch bright machined aluminum wheels with chrome spinners, a new shaker 500-watt audio system with 6-disc cd changer and mp3 capability, and a 6-way power adjustable driver seat. mustang gt 24,370) features a new 300-horsepower 4. 6-liter sohc v8. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of mustang history. The new mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element taillamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967 model. the new mustang is based on a modified version of the platform that underpins the lincoln ls, the jaguar s-type, and the ford thunderbird, but with a new three-link live-axle rear suspension installed in place of the irs under the luxury cars in order to keep the price down (the original idea was to offer the irs as standard equipment, but it will likely be on the cobra version when it comes). Ford reasons that more mustang fans will favor the solid-axle rear suspension for their recreational track days and drag racing. everything under the car has been upgraded substantially from previous mustang levels: bigger brakes by nearly 20 percent, completely new front and rear suspension designs that yield much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering and harder cornering, two new engines, two new transmissions, and a large-diameter (2. 5 inches from end to end) performance exhaust system. There's nothing left of the old mustang but the logos. Optional anti-lock brakes bundled with traction control give any driver much more of a fighting chance in bad situations. both new engines are mounted to their bodies with hydraulic engine mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing, and the combination of the engine and transmission bolted together, is stiffer than previous designs, which should also add to quietness. The car absolutely bristles with other new technologies. the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota by putting the new car on the platform that ford used to call the cdw. By adapting lots of ideas and components from luxury cars like the jaguar s-type, lincoln ls, and thunderbird that were previously built on the cdw model, they have given the mustang a whole new level of sophistication that no mustang before it ever had. There's a very heavy dose of 1967 mustang interior design, with two distinct right and left pods. Because of the longer wheelbase and larger overall size, there is a lot more hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room inside this mustang that in any previous generation mustang. in addition to the slick new interior decor, the new mustang has the industry's first color-changeable instrument panel display, with 125 color schemes to choose from. And, speaking of brightening, there is more shiny metal on the interior, including the vent rings, steering wheel spokes and other bits, and on sunny days, that can cause some vision and glare problems for the driver. we found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners, and in general, the interior looks like it belongs in a much more expensive car. There is an interior upgrade package that adds red leather seats, red door inserts and red floor mats on cars with appropriate exterior colors. Another package adds real aluminum trim to the interior for one more customization step. the basic sound system that comes with the car is pretty darn good, but in this day and age of pervasive music, there has to be more, more wattage, more speakers, more power. The ride has smoothed out, and the remaining harshness is of a completely different order. The new rear suspension uses coil springs and a lightweight three-link design with a panhard bar and other locators to keep things constant. the new 4. 0-liter v-6 engine has more technical sophistication than any previous ford v-6. It is a very solid performer in urban, exurban and suburban duties, and the ratios in the automatic seem well matched to the available torque. When the automatic transmission gets into overdrive fifth gear, the engine goes quietly into economy mode until called upon for a lane change, a pass, or an uphill charge. But it's still a large-displacement v-6 and it sounds more muscular at full throttle than any previous ford v-6 engine. the v-6 deluxe is the most popular model; ford says that for every three gts sold, it will sell seven of the v-6 versions. At this low price, we were particularly impressed with its power, torque, acceleration, and general road manners, including its pretty, rorty exhaust note. The new three-valve v-8 engine features both variable camshaft timing and electronic throttle control, with a new set of smarter, faster-acting engine electronic controls. It will run 0-60 mph in about 5. 5 seconds, it will outbrake a large number of sporty cars with its big new brakes, and it handles better on canyon roads that any previous mustang except the cobra, with a minimum of body roll and a large portion of tire grip. it looks mean, and it drives mean, with 320 pound-feet of torque, a slick shifter, a brawny, loud exhaust note, and one of the world's largest aftermarket networks
